Originally made from European, Russian, and American hemp and sisal. By the mid-19th century, lighter, stronger and more able Manila hemp rope was used. Both standing and running rigging was treated with Stockholm tar, a dark brown pine tar derivative, as preservative. Standing rigging took on a much darker color than the running rigging because it was treated more often.
